Best eats from the past!

Feeling a little nostalgic this morning after reading a blog post on the old A & W Root beer place on Myrtle, so here are some of my favorite food memories of places in Samoasoftball past.
Breakfast
Eggs: The Kahoalii Café at Bazar. I have no idea what was so different in the way the served eggs. I had many breakfast meals there before going to work at Bazar.
Omelet:  Golden Harvest Café.  The Chalet close behind.
Hash Browns: Eureka Truck Terminal. They were just always the right crispy ness. Consistent.
Sausage and Toast: Samoa Cookhouse. Still and always.
Chicken Fried Steak: Betty Maes. More is better in this case. The Gravy was always good. Just had to not look in the kitchen!
Breakfast Steak: A few years ago I would have said Adel’s and Kristina’s. Both have went south lately.
Lunch
Hamburger or Hot Dog: OH’s Hamburger King on Harris. None came even close.
Fries: Lazio’s and the Students INN. Tied and both were just fantastic.
Onion Rings: OH’s again. By a huge margin.
Sub’s: L & M Drive in. Used to be in the space now taken up by Adel’s.
Dinner
Salad: I will go with the Sea Grill still.
Potato: I may get some boos for this, but Sizzler. Mostly because you can add stuff from the salad bar.
Soup: The chowder from Michael’s. Never have ate any to match!
Ribeye Steak: Michael’s. I would say AA but they are inconsistent.
Prime Rib: OH’s. Hands down. Although I have had great ones at the Oberon and Sea Grill.
Your favorites from the past?

Pretty much right on, but V and N, was actually L & M...I know I worked across the street from it at KVIQ-TV for 7 years.

Bevs had the best chicken fried steak. And there was no comparison to the amount of food you getting that place.

Bevs morphed from Betty Maes.

Ha! I knew I could spark an interest in food with you again with that A&W post.

Here goes: L&M, Yes...with the five burgers or five burritos for a dollar.

(Ok...Who posted that L&M Comment above about working at KVIQ for 7 Years? I have my guesses. Trivia for that poster: Who was Dr. Roland Kay? Ha!)

Speaking of proximity to KVIQ-TV, how about Weiner King? And, The Feedbag? And, Maxwell's Deli?

But, let us not forget the Arcata Burger Bar and the lunch counter at Kress on the Mall. Oh wait, you said good food.

After re-reading the post: I would put Dennis & Geri's Myrtletown House up against OH's Townhouse for Best Prime Rib...But, then...we are just harvesting the fruit from the same tree, aren't we.

sorry Ross, bad blogger and don't have a handle yet, tried a couple of times and it kicks this old broadcaster of 7 years with the initial's of MJ to the side. And the Feedbag was great for hangover breakfasts...weiner king, was king too...

Ross: You meant Kress downtown right? I forgot all about that lunch counter. Wiener King was good too!

Here we go again. Having been the youngest Stockroom Manager at JC Penney's, and having eaten at that counter ( and who the heck forgot all about the Red Barn?) , it was Woolworths and it was the same location that is SNC....LMFAO!

7:28pm Woolworths!Thats it! And the Red Barn was awesome. Identify yourself truth of humboldt food!

Oh, Damn...Forgot all about the Stanton's Little Red Barn. The Red Barn was in McKinleyville. Yes, Kress was on The Mall and Woolworth's was downtown. Now, my Mom goes back to a place called Little Joe's and of course the Drive-In where Roy's Auto is today.

Oh, and Anonymous Poster, may I suggest "Nebraska, Here I Come". Ha!

Back to Food Joints in Humboldt County before 1975. Bim's in Arcata, Volpi's and again I have to give a plug to Eureka Seafood Grotto.

Richard, if I can ever figure out this blog stuff I will get a handle and id myself...for now, Ross has it right, Mike ( who ) Mike Jones. My wife worked at the Red Barn when we first got married and her tips put food on the table while we were getting started. Nebraska, Ross, that is where two of my four sons were born!
