1980 Softball Champs! M & D Auto!

I can't believe it has been almost 30 years that my M & D Auto softball team used to war with Reco's. Our team from top left, Sam Skillman, Andy Lameroux, Mark Smith, Rob Colivas, Kevin Gomes, Mike Carroll and Samoasoftball. From the bottom left, Rick "Fergy" Mitchell, Kurt Brundgardt, Loren Price, Sam Colivas and Mike Robinson. We had a great defensive team that just scored enough to get by.

The Times Standard used to do stories on adult softball both for fast pitch and slow pitch. This was a great bragging rights picture for the Sprague's. We won the game, they got the press. Bob was an incredible player who had a unconventional swing but could put the ball out of any local parks. Bob played left field, Brother Billie ("Basil") played 3rd and brother Dave was at 2nd. "Butch" Rasmussen pitched, Dave Schmidt, Randy McBride and Jimmy Sloss also played for Reco's. Click the story to enlarge and read!

I played for Reco's a couples season about 2 or three years later. We had added Mike Burkhardt, The Kaholii Brothers and Harvey Harris.

Richard,
I talk to my dad about this article and he said the only reason that you guys won is because you had the new Ultra Miken with the Nasa approved titanium carbon space shuttle composite. Whats up with that? LOL
I remember being the bat boy for these game I was only four years old but there was like 5 kids fighting to be the bat boy what ever happen to bat boys?
I also remember the sprague brothers always being balls out. Especially basil always covered in dirt. Miss that guy.

Did you use the pink "lady zapper" with the crooked handle that year?

7:16am-I think we were in the transition from wood to metal. I used "The Duchess" wood bat when I first started playing softball. The Spragues played hard! Bob used to hit softballs out of Blue Lake Park with the old bats and could hit to all fields. He later played with me on M & D Auto, Britt Lumber and James Hill Trucking. I miss hearing Basil on the field. He was a dirt baller!

7:48am-I started using Robin's pink lady zapper when she started hitting the ball further than me. I had to paint it white so I wouldn't be hassled about using a "pink" bat. The paint started to wear off and I was caught, the rest is history. Not forgotten to this day. Yee!

12:43pm-I don't think so. This Mark Smith moved out of the area nearly 30 years ago.
