Humboldt Celebrities!

Just who are the most recognized people living in Humboldt County? I mean, which people do most long time residents know or are familiar with? Not counting current people holding elected political offices.

10. Pete- I have picked up Pete in his rag tag clothes and all hitchhiking when he spent much time in Manila. He has a wheel chair now, but is still around the Arcata area.

9. Rollin Trehearne-ThunderCountry” Basketball ref guy.

8. Perry Price- Retired purchasing agent for the City of Eureka. Between the thousands of people he has coached in Humboldt County, hard for Perry to go much of anywhere in Northern California and Southern Oregon without people stopping to talk with him. And he seems to remember everyone!

7. Dana Hall- “The Burleyman” has been around on the radio since 74’? Wow.

6. Dave Silverbrand- Our local “TV” personality.

5. Cheri Arkley- Say what you will about her and Robin, but not many would not recognize her. She has always been pleasant when I have seen her.

4. Harvey Harper- Harvey is one of a kind. He helped me out years back when I had trouble with my old Aerostar van personally, and I have been doing business there ever since.

3. Rex Bohn- Running the Cutten fields has introduced Rex to multi thousands of people in Humboldt County across all social economic and political boundaries. He buys wood chips for the pulp mill. Uses cell phone alot.

2. Corky Cornwell- Sells cell phones. Used to buy wood chips for the pulp mill. Hmmmm.

1. Nancy Flemming- She has to be the most well known figure in the County. The ex-mayor has put her stamp on Eureka.

Of course, the late Hobart Brown would have been at the top before passing.

Now this is just through my eyes. I am sure there are others who will disagree, but I thought I would throw my opinion out there.

No offense but I think you're stuck in 1999.

Rex also used to own 4th Street Connection in the early 80's.
Harvey is a wonderful man. I loved working for him way back. I was sad to leave.

What about T. Great Razooley (Humboldts only bona fide celebrity) Or the dude who used to cut up peoples body parts and throw them in the bay (Again, a national figure)?????

Rex Bohn, Nancy Flemming, Harvey Harper, Cheri Arkley.

Seriously, Richard, you should join the Republican Party.

6:03pm-Gene was high profile, I would recognize Jimmy.

7:28pm-T great and Ford. C'mon PG blog here.

7:44pm-this was not about politics, but since you insist, give your democratic replacements.

Duane Flatmo?

Rex also does countless auctions which puts him in front of a lot of people.

Richard, how much does Rob Arkley pay you to pretend you are a Democrat?

9:44 a.m. gave me a much needed laugh today with that post.

Why does everything have to turn into politics if we are thinking about recognizable people here. I don't think I would recognize Gene Cox but almost everyone else that has been named I could point them out in a crowd.

As far as a recognizable Democrat how about BonBon? RHINO as we all know and that may be close enough. giggle

kym-that is one I missed.

Dave Meserve is another.

What about Colonel Sanders?

Anonymous said...

What about Richard Marks; he's a star! I'd put him right up there with Jim Barnyard and Virginia Bass.

Anonymous said...

I would agree that Humboldt's biggest celebrities are Colonel Sanders, Wendy & her father Dave, Ronald McDonald and Jack. One celebrity who has never really taken off here is Richard Simmons.

most famous..Johnny Mcginnis, best softball player EVER....if you disagree, he will beat you up.

Samoa....Correction...Rollin Trehearne is not from 101.5FM Thunder Country...He's from 92.3FM Big Red Country.

I will agree with Duane Flatmo to be added to the list. I would include Cliff Berkowitz from KHUM to that list.

Harvey Harper, for sure, Rex Bohn, Nancy Flemming, Corki Cornwell and Cheri Arkley, Brian Papstien, Sally Arnot and Muriel Dinsmore all belong on the list. The reason the Republicans garner the celebrity status is because they tend to have more fun in public. Democrats tend to come off as dour in public. Everything is cause driven. After a while, that can be wearing. The Republicans tend to have fun.

Other celebrities. Let's add Don Brown Shannon McWhorter and Roy Smith from Fortuna.

And how about Danny Furlong from North Coast Dance. All of the Kinetic Queens. Harmony Groves, Shaye Harty, Denise Riles and my personal favorite, Monica Topping.

Fred Neighbor and Joyce Hough for Arcata. Michael Fields, Donald Forest and Joan Shirle from Del Arte.

Curley Tate from Curley's in Ferndale. Dennis Hunter from Coast Central Credit Union and the Easter Seals. Singer - Donna Landry.

But...ya'll are forgetting Mike Pigg. Shame on you.

Paul Bassis, ED Denson, Anna Banana in Garberville.

And you really have to include Greg and Carol. They get quite a bit individual media coverage for their political party appearances.

Not a bad list and we haven't even started in on the cowboys.

eko- publically spanking me? Ouch!
Donna Landry is related to Robin. I agree she needed to be on list. (And played softball with Robin by the way.) Brian Papstein and I go back 30 years. Yep. I just think of him as my buddy Brian. Played hoops with and against for 3 decades. Sally and Muriel, yes great locals. Mike Fields. yes. Mike Pigg (he is elected official, doesn't count) no. Dennis Hunter is an elected official. Not qualified. Monica is a personal favorite.

Greg and Carol? I wouldn't have this blog or be on the HCDCC if it wasn't for them. Humboldt power couple. Love em both. Yes they are high profile. Oh yes, I owe them a meal. Is there a cheap buffet anywhere?

Eric V. Kirk said...

Doesn't the food channel guy on Diners and Dives still reside here?

Joel Mielke said...

With the passing of Hobart Brown, Roger Rodoni was the most recognizable person in Humboldt County.

Rex Bohn now assumes the mantle.

Let's eat.

Guy Fieri (Guy Ferry) lives in Santa Rosa, but his parents, Jim and Penny Ferry, still have their home in Ferndale which is a rental. Greg and I rented their house from 1998 - 2000. Guy has become quite big with several shows and TV commercials.

Guy Fieri is probably the biggest celebrity originally from Humboldt at the moment. Hey, He is quite good too, don't you think? I really like his show and persona.

Mike Patton from the band Faith No More was a star for about a year. Graduated from Eureka High.

And remember, Spanky McFarland from the '60's pop group, Spanky and Our Gang, lives in Ferndale. A friend of Curley Tate's. "Sunday, will never be the same...."

You know, as far as Southern Humboldt goes.....We forgot Darryl Cherney.

Carol said...

We might include the singer Sarah Bareilles. She certainly has soared to the top of the pop charts this year.

beachcomber said...

I presume that a "celebrity" is anyone that, when seen in public out of the context of the newspaper or evening news, you do a double-take and say "isn't that....?". I would add June and Ken to the note with Flatmo. They always seem to get double-takes on Friday night at the brewery.

Also, Murl Harpham and Suzie Owsley.

Fred Mangels said...

How about a trip way back in time: Anyone remember Christopher Welsh? He was in the news off and on back around the mid '70s.

Anyone?

Sarah Bareilles is the best known nationally. Her album has been on the billboard top 40 for 10 weeks and is now located at #17. Her hit "Love Song" is at #9 on the billboard hot 100.

Guy Fieri from the food channel is probably second.

I recall that the Arcata Eye reported that Pete was no longer in the area. I haven't seen him. I think the Eye said his family took him to Oregon or someplace like that.

recall larry glass

samoasoftball said...

Forest Defender: Yes. I heard his family had heard he had hit a low and came took him away.

Sang along in a roomful of people with Spanky McFarlane leading the group tonight. We sang God Bless America and California Dreamin'. I got goosebumps harmonizing along. It was a campaign fundraiser for Supervisor Jimmy Smith. What a warm perfect evening in Ferndale!

Roller skate dude...

Used to roller skate between eureka and arcata whilst I was attending HSU...

Anonymous said...

although I heard he is in the big house for murder, sadly enough...

Anonymous said...

Seriously though.....Jerry Droz has done more work for , Eureka then Flemming and all the rest put together. Before he came to , Eureka there were hard core drug dealers on every block , houses were in shambles & junk cars everywhere . He's changed this town for the better .

Alex & Lucinda
