Best Hot Dogs!

A few weeks ago I was in Sacramento and went to Wiener Works with my buddy Brad. User Reviews for Wiener Works, Sacramento MyTravelGuide.com They have these great 14 inch hot dogs and ridiculous portions of fries. I used to get a dog every so often at Manila Market. They broiled Evergood dogs all day and they were a great treat. L & M Drive In and the old OH"s on Harris also used to make great dogs. And the broiled dogs in the old waist cook baskets at Arcata Ball Park for Crab's games in the 70's and 80's were wonderful. I see a great lack of this cuisine in Humboldt County now. Here is my top 5 picks. Please chime in!

1. Costco-I have to go to Costco to get a decent dog? Why is this? But they do have the best ones around. This is sad.

2. Mikes Hamburger-The Chili Dog is really quite good with the garlic fries.

3. Coney Island-Needs more flare and presentation. I like their burgers though.

4. Bob's Footlong-Nice people and good service, but just OK.

5. Fresh Freeze-Although I have not checked one out in a while.

And remember the Marks rule, Quantity over Quality!

Hansen's truck stop has great hot dogs, though I don't eat hot dogs very much so I'm probably not the best to judge them, but they are tasty. But their burgers are the best around by far.

you want a good hot dog
try Murphy's Glendale BBQ
M-F 11-2 every day.

I can't comment on whose hot dogs are the best as I don't eat them. Spouse used to but had to give them up too much cholesterol now. Liked Costco a lot but never tried anywhere else.

I thought you said you wanted to lose weight some time back and were exercising -- this isn't exactly diatetic unless that is all you eat in one day. lol

Forgot to say hot dog is spelled (H)eart(O)(T)ack (D)on't(O)ver(G)orge

I agree with you on the Costco dogs. They are hands-down the best. I especially like mine with just sauer-kraut, that's it! Simple perfection. I will go out of my way to stop at Costco just to have one when I come into town and I live around Scotia....Oh yeah, Hansen's truck stop does have the best burgers. They raise their own beef.

Richard, please focus on weight loss. This kind of talk will only result in a relapse for you, and a late night trip to waremart for a 5 pound keilbasa.

You fools don't know dogs. There is no decent dog in Humboldt County.

What you want to do is get in the car right now and drive down to the East Bay. Stop in at any of the multiple, convenient Top Dog locations in Oakland or Berkeley.

Them's dogs!

Hot dogs = unknown parts. Yum-yum!

Costco's is good because it's Hebrew National, which make the best mass produced hot dogs in the country.

The best hot dog I've had came from a stand in Chicago near their museum. But I don't eat them very often.

Santa Cruz Boardwalk makes the best corn dogs!

Theres Hank condescending the masses again...

Hank Sims said...

Damn skippy I'm "condescending the masses" (sic). I know my dogs.

Don't believe me? Then click this, and see if you don't drown in your own saliva.

Mencken wrote brilliantly on the early days of the hot dog, by the way. He anticipated exactly the development the frankfurter would undergo in the 20th century. The people at Hebrew National probably owe him royalties.

Eric V. Kirk said...

Mencken's quote about not underestimating the taste of the public would apply. FYI - certain hot dogs "plump" when you cook them because they've got a higher ratio of fat to meat.

The problem with hot dogs is like all really great tasting foods there there seems to be a inverse ratio between how good something tastes and how unhealty it is. Hank is right, there are no really great dogs here, but the Costco dog, slathered with lots of condiments is the best thing we have going here. But one a month is my limit for decent health.

Eric V. Kirk said...

hayduke - actually, Hebrew Nationals are pretty good for you. There's still quite a bit of fat, but it's leaner than some regular meat you'd buy.

Hayduke said...

OK. Make that two a month.

Costco dogs are tasty, without a doubt, but I don't like the buns. Too dry, too chewy!
If you find yourself in Boulder, Co stop in at Mustards Last Stand (if it still exists)for a unique dog experience.

I wonder how a http://www.wienerschnitzel.com/
franchise would do here?

Maybe I should start one up and see. I would probably eat the profits.

"Costco dog, slathered with lots of condiments..." Mmmmm. Bad buns? No problem. Plan ahead, and bring your own

Dogs at Crabs games suck, but who cares? They've got condiments. I eat the tofu wieners. Great baseball, and beer that should be worshipped (Mad River). Two outta three--that ain't bad!

Locally it has to be the dogs at the Indianola Market, snappy skins and a great tasting old fashioned hot dog.

If your looking for the best you have to head south to the corner of Melrose and La Brea, then and there in the heart of Los Angeles you can consume the finest dog of all at Pinks Famous Hot Dog stand.

You know, the only problem I have with Hebrew National is that there are only 7 to a package. Nobody sells 7 buns in a package, so you're left over with an extra bun. You would have to buy 7 more packages of hot dogs and 6 more packages of buns for a total of 56 hot dogs before they even out!

Is the extra bun is for Elijah, who's vegetarian maybe?

Anonymous said...

Alright Eric,I see what you're up to.You're just trying to bait Steve Lewis on this blog, with all of your talk about those hebrew nationals!!

Hayduke said...

Steven's over on Eric's blog. He got baited with a post just about him. Sort of like hanging up flypaper. Thanks Eric.

Carol said...

Maybe 7 hot dogs to a package represents the seven days of the week. I have wondered that, too, Eric, regarding Hebrew National having 7 rather than 8 to a package.

samoasoftball said...

"7" is God's perfect number.

Joel Mielke said...

Since buns are invariably longer than the weiners, you simply segment the extra dog and distribute it into the extra bun-space on the other hot dogs.

Nobody will complain about that.

Eric V. Kirk said...

You don't have an extra dog. You have an extra bun!

Carol said...

Feed the seagulls with the extra bun!

Anonymous said...

Is this Carol for real or is someone joking?

Joel Mielke said...

Buns come eight to a bag? D'oh!

Carol, do not, under any circumstances, feed seagulls. It's like feeding crows, or rats.

Eric V. Kirk said...

Feeding the bun to the seaguls is a pretty good idea. We bring our stale bread to the waterfront for the kids to toss it to the seaguls. The kids love it when the birds catch the bread in mid air.

Eric V. Kirk said...

I like seaguls. Even though I can't spell them.

Taylors Sausage hot dogs from Cave Junction, Oregon. Oh, my stinkin' God. Incredible dogs. The bun makes no matter. The hot dog concession stand at the Humboldt County Fair is the best imported dogs to the area. It's worth the trip to the fair each year. Especially for the bangers.

Seven Hot Dogs instead of EIGHT!

God's perfect number in the Old Testament was SEVEN, this represented the combination of 4 + 3 or the 4-Corners of the earth, and the Holy Trinity.

Anonymous said...

4 + 3 = 7

This can also mean the 4 elements of earth: Fire, Water, Wind, Soil and the first trinity, Adam, Eve and Child
