The Eureka Reporter - Article Don was a long time friend of mine. We played ball together. He painted my old Camaro and did a great job. He worked at the Pulp Mill for a short time. He was a body man at Mid City, worked for the garbage company, truck driving, whatever it took. And yes, he battled his demons drug wise. His Bizarre passing does leave questions. Donnie is not around to answer them. May he Rest in Peace.
Don is the third friend I played ball with that has passed recently, the others being Gerry Radford and Billy Thompson. Wow. Way too young.

'Massive' meth overdose killed man found on back porch

Officials from the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office said Monday that a man found dead on the back porch of an Elk River home died from a massive methamphetamine overdose.
The body of Don Holbrook was found by homeowners July 31. While a drug overdose was suspected from the start, several puzzling details led coroner’s officials to initially rule his death suspicious.
“There are just a lot of strange circumstances surrounding this,” Coroner Frank Jäger said Aug. 2. “Nothing adds up.”
But Deputy Coroner Charles Comer said Monday that the toxicology report received late last week left no doubt as to Holbrook’s cause of death.
“It was a massive, massive overdose.”
Comer said the potentially toxic level for methamphetamine is 0.2 to 0.5 milligrams per liter of blood, and Holbrook’s blood contained an astounding 32 milligrams per liter.
“It’s definitely the highest methamphetamine level I’ve ever seen,” Jäger said.
The identification of the substance that killed Holbrook helped clear up one mystery. Investigators were puzzled by the remote location where the body was found — at the end of a rural road off Elk River Road north of Humboldt Hill — but Comer said a known meth house is located in the immediate vicinity.
Additional questions haven’t been completely answered, but have lost some of their urgency now that a cause of death has been determined.
For instance, the residence where Holbrook was found is located in a forested area, but his body was covered with sand.
Comer said Holbrook’s whereabouts were unknown for roughly 24 hours prior to his death.
“He could have picked up the sand anywhere during that time.”
Also, Holbrook’s boots had been removed and were found sitting next to his body on the porch.
Jäger explained that there was sand in the boots, Holbrook wasn’t wearing any socks and his feet were rubbed raw.
It was likely, Jäger said, that his feet hurt, so he took off his boots and then died.
Holbrook, a resident of Eureka, was 47 years old.

9:52am-Yes I did. Was not surprised, just saddened. Donny had quit using before, but obviously lost his battle with his addiction.
Humboldt County, we have a Meth problem.
He did quit and was clean and had been for some time. He was planning out a new path in life, but that was taken from him.
