Huge layoffs! I know, no surprise here. The Eureka Reporter - Article I just wonder why the TS did not mention the layoffs. Times-Standard Online - Palco secures $75 million in financing
Britt was once privately owned and joined with Palco and the workers suffered. Yakima was a locally owned enterprise who sold out to Corporate interests, and where are the workers? Louisiana Pacific Corporation wanted to concentrate on their "core" businesses, and what happened to the 1,000 LP Humboldt County workers? What happened to the Hundreds of Sawmill workers at Cal-Pac/Blue Lake Forest Products/Eel River Lumber and the nearly 1,000 Simpson workers (Pulp, plywood and sawmill)? Corporations and local/federal governments have abandoned workers without giving them the tools to adjust to different workplace environments. Time and again locally.
That is another positive thing about being union. We have peer outreach programs with facilitation from fellow workers for displaced workers to help put them back on the job market. Just saying. Again.

Well as always I have something to say, They have left the county to other areas for better pay but not better lives. For you natives that still live there do your best to take care of and keep your LOCAL owned companies. And the big corps out.
A good example i did not ever eat at the Seafood Grotto until after I moved away from Humboldt county. And now its gone as a lot of other good bussineses.
As far as the TS I have heard it refered to as the sub standard news paper.
Rick
Everyone wants to cry about the poor LOCAL business guy. Lets all feel real bad for the Local person who is laying on a beach someplace while his local workers are living in a box out in back of the LOCAL business. PAY A LIVING WAGE HERE!!! Or allow real business people in to pay well with benefits.Leta advertise our cash based underground economy here and big business will rush here to establish a real economy.BUB
weiners whiners wahhhhh!
PL/Britt and all corporations don't give a poop about workers! But Richard gives a poop about local workers! Yes he does!
And local workers give poop to Richard too.
Don't worry....we got The Headwaters Fund.
4:44pm-Those 22 million dollars in funds are NOT available to displaced workers unless they have a "plan". Fire and Light, Mazzoti's catering, Humboldt Botanical Garden, Buckeye conservacy, other shortsighted City and County pet projects, you know, businesses that do not pay a living wage but make you "feel" good about the Headwaters money going somewhere. Don't get me started!
Wahhhhhhhhhhh Richard.
Wow Rich, what do you mean by not getting you started? You seem to be humming right along., and good!!! You don't dodge any subject and it's easy to get you going!!! It makes me think of that good old Husky chainsaw (made over seas) that always starts on the first pull !!! Keep it up, BUB
Hank, who is BUB? Get on it!!!
Hank, who is BUB? Get on it!!!
Hank, who is BUB? Get on it!!!
Hey Rich, how's it working out with your new boss? Poor Richard, he now know's the true meanig of "getting BOHNED!!!
Richard you are right about "pet projects" and Headwaters funds. Call friends to just come on down and get their grant funds. Web site a little hard to get to but might be interesting for some of you to see. Headwaters funds were supposedly to be able to replace jobs lost but were split into three funds. The one fund I never thought they should put money into was the venture capital fund. Most of that money if not all of it would be lost. Even the venture capital experts don't have good track records across the country.
Maybe the workers could apply for a Headwaters grant to formulate the "plan".
Some people think shop local means K-Mart, Safeway, Ray's, etc. None of those are local they just employ local people. Same thing as any other big box does. Some boxes are better than others and actually pay benefits.
7:58am-I tried to tap into the Headwaters funds for a feasibility study for an Employee Stock Option Plan (ESOP) buyout of the pulp mill 3 years ago. Got the run around......yeah I know, I have covered this subject too many times. I will stop now.
