More Elitist golfers in Humboldt than Marin?

With the closing of the San Geronimo golf course in Marin County, the uber rich county now only has 3 public golf courses left for over 1/4 of a million people. Not enough patrons is the reason given for closure. In Humboldt county we have 6 public courses (Beau Pre, Willow Creek, Eureka, Redwood, Benbow and Shelter Cove) and 1 private (Baywood) to accommodate 135,000 residents .

Seems to me that we are well served in Humboldt when it comes to making duffers happy. Is it because Humboldt people have more time and disposable income? I doubt it, but don't have the answer. Personally, I am a hack, but just don't seem to have the time or patience to play enough to improve my game.

And here's an interesting fact. Private courses are given a massive tax break (existed previous to new tax plan and was left intact) for "conservation easement" purposes. This tax break was originally intended to preserve farmland and forested areas but was written loose enough that private golf course owners recognized they could benefit enormously. Always nice to know that the average American can help the super rich get a financial break and they can also golf without the dirty lower classes (us 99%) infringing on their recreational endeavors. Just makes you love how our country is functioning now.

When I left Colorado 8 years ago the private courses where going public. Because the members where going to a lot of the new ad challenging course.

They all have Green Fees. You can play at any course you choose. There seems to be some whining here because golf courses get a tax break for de facto open space for which everyone benefits. Try running a golf course before you start whining about them being rich. I suggest you go talk to the City of Eureka Municipal Golf Course Superintendent for some enlightening.

If you golf at the Eureka Muni at all you know that golf isn't just for the "elite".

Lots of blue collar golfers at the muni every single day.
