The rain is here, must be baseball season!
It has been cold and rainy lately, so it must be baseball season. This is one time of the year that really gets under my skin in Humboldt County, the rotten spring weather. It also leaves our baseball and softball teams at a disadvantage as far getting on the fields to practice and play games. We need either all weather ball fields (think artificial turf)or a indoor facility (think roof over Eureka Babe Ruth or roof over any little league field in Humboldt). Anybody else out there feel this would be a good project for our community?

Yes! And one over Washington Fields for the softball players!
Although I did spend last Saturday enjoying the brief sunshine at Arcata Ball Park watching the high school JV tournament -- did you know the JV programs aren't even funded? Makes me crazy. I do have some ideas for raising money for next year...
Heated bleachers would be nice, too. :)
Take a break Pooh, Didn't You and Robin just get back from the land of sun. And know you going to bitch about the rain. Spare me.
Did you happen to see any Rockies Games???
I remember long ago, for Humboldt Childcare Council, trying to set the world record for playing softball the most consecutive hours. We started playing at was at the time named JFK 1 field. About 24 hours into it the rains hit and it became a mud bog. We used one of our breaks to move. You got 5 minutes for every hour and they could be saved up. We moved to the field house at HSU. While it was nice to play indoors the lights made it kinda wierd on the eyes.
Oh, and we fell about 3 hours short.
Washington School fields are actually great and it's because of all the work that the volunteer crews have done. It's still very playable even after we've had a lot of rain. Cudos to all that have spent time and supplied materials to keep those fields playable. City of Eureka should take a lesson from these folks. Take a look at Kennedy and Hartman fields and see how bad they are. Nothing at all has been done to keep up the infields after they were redone a number years ago by Miller Farms, and the outfields are atrocious. I don't think we even need to talk about Cooper Gulch; what a joke. I'll bet we could round up some volnteers to spruce up Kennedy and Hartman but would the City even let it happen? Doubtful ... too many liability (insurnace) issues. (also a joke)
Nope, a bad idea until we can create some local living wage jobs and a sustainable economy. Why invest in a declining community. In other words not until Neely is shown the door with a swift but firm kick in the ass on her way out. Only then can we focus on going forward.
Jen: I am just glad to hear there is a JV program in Arcata. If Nick is playing now, he will most likely be playing legion ball this summer. So he will get a chance to play in good weather later! (Is he playing outfield?)
Stu: You got that right. The Eureka fields need to be upgraded like Arcata. That may happen in the next few years. Stay tuned.
Rick: No Rockies games. They do have a good team though.
Rambo: I played in the field house a bit. Was not a fan.
You didn't like playing in the field house cuz with that weak ass swing you have you couldn't even hit the overhead rafters which was basically a foul ball and do over back in those days.lol.................just messing with ya
Oh man...spent a cold several hours hunkered down at the Eureka Babe Ruth Field the other night. Some people brought little Coleman space heaters. I felt like we were bundled up like Green Bay Packer fans. But, we hung in there. Geez, can you imagine the cost of making Eureka Babe Ruth Field an indoor facility? What are we talking, $3 Million? Maybe it could double as a rodeo grounds in the off season. Ha!
