The Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers (AWPPW) local 49 had a lively well attended general meeting tonight and we need some help. If you worked at Evergreen Pulp and have the desire to work for Freshwater Tissue in the near future, please e-mail me with your current address and phone number. I would suggest that to former salary workers also.
Local 49 Standing Committee Representatives have talked to Freshwater CEO Bob Simpson and have had positive response. Bob is hoping for the return of 65% of the past labor force, and would like for us to identify them before/during continued negotiations. The hopes is to have a labor agreement by June 9th! If Freshwater Pulp is able to garner a permit from the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board meeting on June 10th at Santa Rosa, Freshwater wants to start bringing back workers on June 11th.
This is fast and furious and just good news for many Vendors, Longshoreman, Truck Drivers, Sawmills, Harbor District, Dock Workers, Local Labor Tradesmen and the many unemployed Humboldt County residents who can be a part of an environmentally friendly project on a huge "Green" stage.
Good luck to Bob Simpson and Freshwater Tissue!

This is the best I've felt, body and soul in 18 months.
God bless,,,,
Have the workers ever been paid for the work they did for Evergreen? What about medical benefits? I would be happy for the jobs if the mill were not so broken down and out of compliance with environmental standards. How is this company different from Evergreen? How do you know workers will not be left unpaid and sick?
I never thought it would happen but it did and I couldn't be happier for the employees. Is there an issue with getting the wayer turned on to the facility? I heard there was but the person saying so is less than reliable.
Anonymous...THIS IS FOR YOU!!!
You have a lot of questions with no answers. A company back at this mill is a big plus for this county. Not every company is like those in the past and there is no guarantee that the same won't happen again. I am one that suffered those consequences and willing to give this company a go for their money and a shot in the arm financially for all who get involved. If he tries and fails, so be it. GIVE THEM A CHANCE!!! This company is going to give $300,000 to help pay some of those medical bills that he is not responsible for!!!

It's all about money isn't it? What about the health of your children?
What about the health of the children in the places where pulp mills have little if any environmental regulations that produce our toilet paper and cardboard boxes we all consume? American kids are better for our shoving the environmental issue over to third world countries because local enviros can't think globally and accept environmental responsibility?
This for Anonymous 3:14..... My husband's family are from Samoa. The kids were born in Eureka and raised in Samoa. His father was a boss at the pulp mill-clear back when it was GP. All 5 children worked for some form of the mills out there. Three still worked for the pulp mill when it went down. All of their health problems[which are few] are not related to the mills. Some of them still live in Samoa. My father-in-law worked there before all the new regulations came into play. And he when he died it had nothing to do with the PULP MILL.
This is for anonymous 4:24. I have two grandfathers who smoked their entire adult lives and died of things not related to smoking. I have three uncles and two aunts and two brothers who have smoked for 20+ years and have few health problems.
If you are concerned working in the pulp mill will increase your chance of health problems, I have posted a study on our website that proves otherwise. You will find the study at www.freshwaterpulp.com, click on the environmental facts icon.
I,m happy for both their families!! But what we want if that mill open!!!!
