The wienie tour took us to Fresh Freeze on Harris in Eureka.
1. Hot Dog-Was Grilled and so was the bun. Steve had a Long dog with everything. I, boring course, had yet another chili dog! Chili was just average. The buns were very good. Rating: 3.5 out of 5
2. Condiments-Lots of fixings poured on by the cook. They have those cheaply made catsup packets. They did give us a bottle when requested. Steve said there was too much relish on his dog. Rating: 3 out of 5
3. Ambiance- Ya gotta love the 50’s type theme. The black and white family picture with all the kids in what looks to be a convertible Nash with no seat belts is classic Rating: 4 out of 5
4. Extras- The fries were just so so. I had a chocolate milkshake that was really good. Rating: 2.5 out of 5
5. Parking-Nice big lot. Usually some old time cars to check out. Service is a little slow, so be prepared to wait. 4 out of 5
Overall rating 3.5 out of 5

You'd better go back and try those fries again, Richard.
ReplyDeleteYour fries review is almost criminal. My wife induced labor with those fries they were so good. Maybe you need a uterus.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame about the FreshFreeze. Best decor, worst food.
ReplyDeleteFresh Freeze makes great hamburgers and will make the French fries extra crisp, if you ask. Haven't found a better burger...
ReplyDeleteI rather enjoy the low-rent fixins of Fresh Freeze. Because, it's the exact same food I grew up on with these kinds of stands all around Humboldt County. Maggie's Hamburgers, Arcata Burger Bar, Twigsville Jolly-Kone, Lou's Drive-In, Little Red Barn...need I go on?
ReplyDeleteI love burger stand food...well, in moderation with what my doctor will allow for cholesterol intake.
You know what? The hot dogs are just ok at Fresh Freeze, but I still order them anyway. The CR Gym had GREAT hot dogs this past weekend. Go figure!
Only Cafe Marina, the Samoa Cookhouse and Fresh Freeze are left of the old Stanton's empire. Stanton Elliott had Stanton's Coffee Shop at 5th and M and a chain of "fast" food places in the sixties. Pam's Park 'n Eat, Deb's Drive-In, The Red Barn. The food was good but that midnight Timber Topper was not always your friend.
ReplyDeleteStanton Elliot had it going on. Here's how I remember the chain:
ReplyDeleteStanton's on 5th Street, Cafe Marina, Pam's Park N' Eat, Deb's Drive-in, Red Barn in McKinleyville, Little Red Barn on F Street, Eureka, Fresh Freeze in Henderson Center and the Uniontown Coffee Shop in Arcata. Dick Adams of Dick Adams TV & Appliance told this story while teaching business classes at CR. Stanton Elliot started his empire by bringing a special delight to Eureka for the first time from the World's Fair. It was soft-serve ice cream. He called it Fresh Freeze. The little hole-in-the-wall where he served this product was at the T-Bones location on Broadway and Clark attached to Eureka Market next to the Post Office. Ring a Bell? And man, you are so right about the Timber Topper!
I used to love Fresh Fresze back in the 70s. Maybe even the 80s. I've since stopped going there. Food, mediocre at best. Not sure what happened. It can also take forever to get your order.
ReplyDeleteLast time I went there, maybe 2 or 3 years ago, I called in my order first, hoping it would be prepared quicker than the time before. Despite calling it in, I still waited 45 minutes (yes, I checked)for just a burger and fries, and they didn't seem that busy to me.
I just had a corn dog @ Fresh Freeze. Man it was good. Not quite as good as the ones at the carnival when the oil is fresh but pretty darn good. The fries are really good too. A soft serve after your dog is definitely recommended.
ReplyDeleteIt's not the best food, but it's fun and cheap. The kids love it.
ReplyDeleteYour little sister is a hot dog nut from way back and her favorite was always at Broadway Lanes. Split down the middle footlongs and fried up on the grill.
