Wal Mart in Eureka?

Next thing you know and we will have a Home Depot too. I am not a big fan of either because of their history of how they treat employees. But I am sure that if Wal Mart opens a store in the Bayshore Mall, they will have huge crowds shopping there. Why do I think that? I remember when they opened the K-Mart on Broadway and it was packed for years! Kind of funny thinking about it now since they have slowed down since other stores have opened such as Big Box Costco and Target. It will be interesting to see the communities reaction if the rumor has legs.

And ironic, given that the reactionaries are fighting vehicle and pedestrian safety improvements along Richardson Grove under the mistaken belief it will keep out big boxes. Those big boxes are already here and will continue to come, whether they have to offload merchandise around the grove or not. The only thing being stopped is improved public safety.

  2. Anonymous, what will be ironic is if Walmart does open in the mall and most everything else closes.

After all wouldn't it be better to have to drive to Redding to get your Sears lawn tractor worked on?

The mall is like a big body and Walmart is like a cancer. It doesn't enhance the rest of the body, it trys to destroy it.

No Tom, what you've described is a delusion. Wal-Mart would compete head-to-head with Target and K-Mart. If there was going to be an economic apocalypse, it would have already happened.

  4. I'm surprised K-Mart is still up and running. I just don't see that many people shopping there.

The parking lot is usually a third full. How often do you drive through the south end of Eureka, drive down the long entrance to K-Mart, check out the parking lot, and drive back out? Fred, why do you do that at all? I assume you do, because it would be difficult to have an opinion about the parking lot occupancy rate unless you did.

  6. I'll admit to not driving by there all that often but, when I have, there doesn't seem to be all that many cars there.

The handful of times I've actually went to Kmart, there hasn't been all that many shoppers there, either.

I'm not sure what critical mass is for a store like that, as far as shoppers are concerned, but it just didn't seem like that many people shop there.

I felt the same way about Montgomery Wards. Never could see how they stayed in business here, and they didn't, after years and years.

  7. KMart and Target - and probably WalMart, too - are places where you shop for necessities - cat foot, socks, shampoo, towels, curtains, blankets, knee pads, ankle braces, mailing envelopes, toothpaste, water shoes, birthday presents for kids, minor camping supplies, ironing boards, storage containers... there are NO LITLLE LOCAL BOUTIQUES THAT SUPPLY THESE.

This whole myth that it will kill off the - what? who? Who carries toilet paper? Paper towels? Who carries these things that will be put out of business by a WalMart?

    Think, people. THINK.

    Kmart mostly sucks.
Target almost sucks, their clearance prices help them not.
    Rays prices suck.
Safeways prices except for items on sale sucks.

    Costco rocks
    Winco is good.

    That being said . . .
    Walmart sucks.

I shopped at one recently while in Redding, because it was one of the few places open late at night. Prices were not that impressive, I find cheaper locally. and while they have a decent selection, the quality of items not by big names, like Carter or Fisher Price etc. sucks. And their pricing is no better then anywhere else locally.

I for one will be doing more and more of my shopping online, and less at local big boxes except Costco.

Look at what the big chains did to Burger Time! They abused it. They slapped it around. They raped it.

If you want to see the future of old town, just drive by the old girl, Burger Time in Eureka.

I would bet Roger would beg to differ. Remember, he operated Wiener King there first. They were a chain restaurant out of Ohio. I believe it was a case where Jack-in-the-Box gave him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Local Ga: "l 'I for one will be doing more and more of my shopping online, and less at local big boxes except Costco."

    WTF is that?

Way to support your 'local businesses'. Don't you get it? Costco is Walmart! Same business model, but politically correct.

  14. I will be okay, Walmart is just another store trying to take over the world. You should be worrying about Apple not Walmart.
