I have been approached by many in the community about the plight of adult softball in Eureka. With the passing of Measure O, there is a fleeting chance at having adult softball again in Eureka. It just has to be self sufficient. But you can't just sit on the sidelines and belly ache! (Or dugouts if you will) Call your elected City Council People and let them know you would like to see Eureka City Adult Softball leagues brought back.
Ward 1 Councilperson Marian Brady @ 441-4169.
Ward 2 Councilperson Linda Atkins @ 441-4168.
Ward 3 Councilperson Mike Newman @ 441-4170.
Ward 4 Councilperson Melinda Ciarabellini @ 441-4167.
Ward 5 Councilperson Lance Madsen @ 441-4171.

Just leave a message if they are not there!
If you have the itch to start playing in the near future, the Mad River Softball Association is hosting a "Spring" league of either mens or co-ed league starting in April. League games are on Sundays, and teams play double headers at the Arcata Sports Complex. The nicest natural playing fields in all of Northern California. Our regular season starts on June 13th.
Was Adult Softball being funded by the city? If so, why?
ReplyDeleteOr is the issue just the waiving of a field usage fee?
Hahahaha I like your articles onthe town of samoa and all the stupid lazy people who live their with all the abandoned cars. Vary funny!
ReplyDeleteThe fees didn't cover the costs. So they shut it down.
ReplyDeleteWho would want to play on Eureka's shitty fields? They are horrible.
ReplyDeleteThe City of Eureka ran the softball league at a loss. I suggested raising the price to cover costs last year and was told by the Recreation Department that Eureka staff had told them that was not an option and unfeasible. I told them Mad River Softball Association runs the league for the City of Arcata and we in fact had more men's teams than Eureka and teams pay enough to cover costs. Deaf ears.
ReplyDeleteThe City of Arcata fields are about a 9.5 out of 10. Wes does a fantastic job at having them ready. Arcata is just a wonderful place to play softball.
The City of Eureka fields are a 2 out of 10. Need more water in the infields and much dragging. The outfield grasses are not kept at all and the gopher holes are a joke. Dangerous comes to mind. But the population hub for the county is in Eureka and many still want to play local. I just wish somebody from Eureka maintenance would take notes from Arcata and try to emulate what they do.
How sad is it that 15 years ago we were playing in tourneys in Eureka with all 4 fields being used and around 32 teams playing. The championship game was played at Kennedy and the snack bar would be open.
ReplyDeleteHaving tournaments in Eureka is a revenue gainer for the City. And yet I have had nothing but obstacles to climb to hold tournaments there. That is why I hold them in Redding, Weaverville, Willow Creek and Arcata. Those places have welcomed and even requested that I hold tournaments at their complexes. (Not to mention Blue Lake, Fortuna, Samoa and Manila.) The last tournament I held in Eureka nearly lost money because of the City of Eureka's bogus insurance requirement that is up and above what is expected at other cities. (Nearly $900 for a weekend! I am able to purchase insurance for other cities for $400 a year!)
ReplyDeleteOh i completely understand the city has ruined softball. I remember playing a 7:45 game at Cooper South a few years ago and on my way to Babes afterwards i drove by Kennedy and Hartman and there were no games being played there. Unheard of back in the day.
ReplyDeleteCity of Eureka leaders don't care and the parks and rec maintenance staff knows absolutely nothing about field maintenance and nothing has been done over the years to educate them. What an embarrasment for the City of Eureka. Shameful.
ReplyDeleteI saw some volunteers last weekend working on the fields at Washington School. They were getting the fields ready for the upcoming season. They graded the infields, cleaned up the edges, and added more crushed red rock, all things that the City of Eureka has failed to do since they had their fields redone about 10 or 12 years ago. If the fields at Washington School can be so good, why can't Kennedy and Hartman (only a block away) be good too?
ReplyDeleteYou can avoid this problem by rinsing the dishes with running tap water before loading them in the dishwasher. This will pick up the candlelight and reflect it back into the room. Remove this so you can remove the dirt or any cloying particles beneath this component. If your shot is taking only 10 seconds and is coming out weak and watery, try grinding your coffee finer.
