Broadway Taco Bell a front?

What the heck is with this place! Robin and I were driving by the Broadway Taco Bell past 11pm and there was a line around the restaurant! And every time we go by the place, regardless of what time of the day, there seems to be an average of 7 cars in the drive through line. I have been all over the west coast and have never have seen a Taco Bell as busy. Just what sets this store above all the others in the chain? There not serving crack in those tacos are they? (Joking! Thanks to Chris Rock)

  1. There not serving crack in those tacos are they?

Nope. They just serve tasty food at a very affordable price. If I'm in a pinch, as far as money goes, I can get two of their beefy bean burritos (or whatever they're called) for just a few pennies over two bucks. That's a meal for me.

They're also one of the [what seems to be]fewer places that offer real, unflavored iced tea.

Yep, the drive thru line often seems long, but it's not always that way. I went in there a few weeks ago and the drive thru was empty. Parking lot seemed almost full, though. I figured I was gonna have to fight my way through a crowd to order my lunch.

Went inside and only one table was taken. I guess most of the cars in the parking lot belonged to the people that work there.

I'd go there more often, if it wasn't down on Broadway, which I try and avoid like the plague. I hate to say it, but I almost wish Eureka's Henderson Center Fresh Freeze would sell out and we could get a Taco Bell put there instead.

Probably cause a traffic congestion problem, though.

Have you seen the commercial where the stoned kid orders 30 tacos at the drive-through window? They know their customer base.

  4. Didn't the Taco Bell on 5th - now Pachanga - get closed down because drugs were being sold there? Or was that just a crazy rumor?

  5. Kristabel: I don't know about any drug rumor, but there was a spitting rumor that really killed the business at that location. Anyone remember that?

  6. What is now Pachanga was a "Taco Time" not a Taco Bell.

What does unflavored Iced Tea taste like Fred and why would anyone buy it when you could just drink plain water?Sorry Jim your wrong. Someone spit in a Sheriff deputies food. There was also dealing by employees as I recall.

  8. Eeeew...I never heard the spitting rumor. Are you sure Jim? I know there was a Taco Bell somewhere around there that closed in the early '90s. Of course, I could be completely confused. I drank a lot of wine coolers and really bad beer back then.

  9. There was Taco Bell on the north side of Eureka on 5th Street. I forget what the cross street was. I think it might have been where the Subway sandwich place is now. I'd have to go look.

It was quite popular, just as the current one is, but closed down after a Eureka cop claimed he saw one of the cooks spit on his food. The cook denied it but I guess the damage was done and they lost too much business and the place had to close.

I'm not sure but I think the cook in question might have been arrested for that. Don't recall what the outcome was if he was arrested.

  10. Ooops. After thinking about it, the Subway I'm thinking about is on 4th Street, not 5th.

It tastes like just iced tea without any sugar or other flavors added to it like all those yuppie brands you see everywhere nowadays. Burger King carries that Strawberry flavored Lipton iced tea that I detest so I never buy any.

I loves me some Pepsico brand food products! Chalupa, Gordita, Crunchwrap supreme, Double Decker Taco Supreme, it don't matter, it all eats and it eats good. And 32-oz Code Red Mountain Dew! Hey, when the hippies threw out the Taco Bell in Northtown, Arcata, people went elsewhere for their refried bean fix. Both of the McKinleyville and Eureka stores are doing aces. Yep, I loves me them pattern restaurants.

And Kristabel was right. Drugs were dealt at that location on 5th street across from Burgerking. Spitting, too, but that was a different incident. Taco Time was located down at the stoplight at W street across from Kinko's where the Mexican Restaurant used to serve Swedish Pancakes.

But, still, oldtimers have to show big ups for the L&M Burger Bar on Wabash next to the Woolen Mills. 5 Burritos for $1.

Eureka's Henderson Center Fresh Freeze serves something they call a milkshake. It doesn't taste like a milkshake, though. In fact, I don't think there's any milk in it. I put some of it in my freezer at home, but it did not freeze!

As to the Taco Bell on the north side of Eureka on 5th Street, I placed an order there once about 15 years ago and then went to wash my hands. The bathroom was so filthy! No soap or paper towels, either! I went back and asked where the employees washed THEIR hands. In that same bathroom, I was told. I cancelled my order and never went back. I also reported it to the County health department, but I don't know what if any action they took.

If you value your health, check the bathrooms in any restaurant before you order. If there is no soap or towels, you can be pretty sure the employees are making your food with dirty hands.

There. Is that sanitary enough for you to print, Richard?

Pachanga was the Taco Bell, and Taco Time used to be on Myrtle at West where the Luz Milas is now.

It's also one of the few places that serves food at all hours, so it's a place people can go after the bar, parties, movies, etc.
