The Eureka Reporter - Article My brother Mike was up from Sacramento this weekend and saw we were potentially getting a Home Depot. He was shocked and disturbed by these developments. I told him people were still in the fighting process and he just laughed and said if they wanted in, they will be there.
I guess I better get a petition out there for a ball park on the waterfront soon! (You know, to match the Basketball Court in the Adorni.)
Richard, the basketball court at the Adorni sucks. No seating for fans, horrible lighting and shooting background. The whole building sucks. It has the most functionally obsolete floor plan I have ever seen. A useless lobby, weight room that is way too small, a small crafts room, and a small meeting room. What a facility it could have been! It could have been like Healthsport only on the bay, with an Olympic size swimming pool, and some sort of maritime use, like boat docks and kayak rentals. The Adorni Center is a joke ... and Tim Fleming calls it the "crown jewell of the Eureka waterfront".
ReplyDeletehe just laughed and said if they wanted in, they will be there.
ReplyDeleteIn closely following news about Home Depot over the last year it's clear they are willing to fight a community that wants to keep them out until the bitter end.
So when Brian Morrissey said “One of the reasons we chose Home Depot was their commitment to the communities where they are,” it made me throw up in my mouth a little.
They're committed to destroying any competitor in the communities in which they operate.
ReplyDeleteHow is hiring some Olympic athletes helping our community?
ReplyDeleteWell I have to say Mike is right. But I still feel that you should keep the big box stores out of the county. kind of like Costco and Target you know the Veteran and Bell Ringers hating store.I heard that Wally World opened a store in Cresent City and everybody goes up there now to shop. I dont shop Wally World that much but i drive right past Target when I do. And HD will do the same if they desire.
ReplyDeleteFirst we were told there would be soccer fields. Then we were told there would be no big box. I repeat, no big box. Now we have Home Depot. Isn't Home Depot a big box? I repeat a big box?
ReplyDeleteCarol and Greg,Heraldo,Richard, and everyone else,I hope to see you there on Thursday.Let them hear your objections.
ReplyDeleteAnd I just heard on the radio that there stocks took another plunge.
ReplyDeleteOops,their stocks.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for home depot to open their doors.
ReplyDeleteyou guys are afraid of them building it because the vast majority of the population here will in fact shop there.
We want to be able to better our quality of life and afford it.
Not everyone here wants to keep HD out. I'm waiting for it to open. I go to the one in Crescent City now. Some how it hasn't put Ace out of business. Some of you must leave Humboldt once in a while and drive by numerous Home Depot stores with other large stores selling the same type of goods that aren't going out of business like Lowe's. These are not in huge cities.
ReplyDeleteWell I lived right down the street from one when I lived in Albany, and what a horrid store, every time I'd go in their you'd see new sets of employees and a worker morale so low it was depressing, and they didn't charge any less for most goods that you could've gotten in any of the local Berkeley stores. How they operate is they set their prices for products at a minute amount less than the competing stores in the area, and when those stores go out of business they mark up their prices to match what people were paying for the products at the other stores.
ReplyDeleteAnd the quality of there stuff sucks, not to mention the quality of the service contractors. It certainly is Walmart with a hammer. What's funny is once it gets built here if it does, the people who'll be bitching about it the most will be the ones so fervent in bringing one here. You'll see increases in crime, increases in traffic congestion which leads to taxpayer money needing to be spent to rebuild the roads going into it,can't wait to read Leo Sears' piece about that one.
And why are people so against putting in a business there that pays a decent wage?Is Rob Arkley serious when he wonders why kids leave the area after graduating high school, instead of staying here and working at a retail outlet at minimum wage, and which is supposed to be a great thing for the area?
Rob Arkley certainly didn't make his fortune in Eureka, he moved away to do it. But then, I would have probably moved away too if my dad was Robin Arkley.
ReplyDeleteWe are planning to attend. See you all there?
ReplyDeleteAre they serving Prime Rib? Maybe a huge end cut?
ReplyDeletePrime rib? Now richard that would block your free flowing colon!!! And Stu, places for fans to sit ? Don't over inflate!!! As far as the Olympic atheletes go; Do you honestlt think tha there job at home despit is any more than a juket around the country to promote Home Despit? It is a tired ploy that is telling you that if you don't support Home Despit, you don't support our olympians so you are un- American. Bad tactic Brian ,But I am still in support of the Marina Center!!!

ReplyDeleteIt will be cleaned to local, state and federal standards!!! Now lets go to your house and tell you what our vision is for that tract!!!
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing Former City councilman Dave Meserve ranting about how awful big box stores and then one time seeing him walking out of Target with two bags FULL of stuff!
ReplyDeleteSuch hypocrisy...they want a high quality of life for themselves and they want the rest of us to be toiling and exhausted just to survive.
Home Depot pays more than minimum wage and they have health benefits, stock options and 401k plan. Had a friend that applied in Redding for a job at Home Depot that was working here at Simpson and he would have made more money at Home Depot than Simpson.
ReplyDeleteThe Adorni is built on a contaminated capped site and I don't remember anyone insisting that it be cleaned up thoroughly. So what's the difference? The Adorni actually touches the bay.

Funny. The same thing happened when Costco opened. People who opposed it for various reasons were seen there soon after it opened for business. That includes at least one local politician who had yelled long and loud against it. I was astonished to see him in the pharmacy line, but he held his head high for some reason.
Can we all spell h-y-p-o-c-r-i-t-e?
Are we all doing our best to avoid becoming one?
"That includes at least one local politician who had yelled long and loud against it."
ReplyDeleteWell I wouldn't call Rex Bohn a politician, but you are correct he and his buddies at Renner screamed pretty loud about Costco coming here.
Well since the object of big boxes are to crush its competitors in a given area which it has done to some businesses, one indeed does has a more limited choice of where to buy crap.
Yeah Mark, and we all see how Renner has suffered as a result...as if...
ReplyDeleteI thought Rex Bohn was a Republican. Republicans are for competitive business and growth aren't they?
ReplyDeleteActually, I know Rex Bohn and he is in favor of competition and privately had no problem with Costco gas coming in.
ReplyDeletePlease substantiate Rex's "screaming pretty loud about costco coming here".
Yeah, if you want an example of a Councilmember in Eureka who screams loud and does NOT A DAMNED THING then look no further than Chris Kerrigan, all ambition and no ethic.
ReplyDeleteI told him people were still in the fighting process and he just laughed and said if they wanted in, they will be there.
ReplyDeleteDid you tell them about the "WalMart Waterloo?"
Yeehaw bring it on
ReplyDeleteMore goods from China. That's just what we need.
ReplyDeleteBrought to you by the Bush Crime Family. You do of course know that George Bush, Sr. was Nixon's ambassador to China?
