Man I hate negative political campaigns!
I went to the CO-OP in Eureka today to buy the Chronicle and TS (Scored the ER for Free!) and there among the Fishwraps was a negative hit piece leaflet on Eureka Councilman Mike Jones. The flyer had his picture and took soundbites out of an old article from the Northcoast Journal. It was done very sophomoric on purpose I am guessing, so as not to hint to the origin. Nothing to do with Mike's record on the Council. Just old news about neighborhood issues. I sure hope Nancy Abrams campaign had nothing to do with it. I am sure this came from the Left or Liberal factions and I will to tell you, I do not condone this behavior. If you are going to put out a hit piece, at least identify yourself. Too bad local politics can come down to innuendos and misinformation. Just my take.

Well Richard it depends on which issue your talking about.I'll wait until I see it to comment more indepth. But Mike has brought his neighborhood issues in the past to council, such as having his neighbors peacock removed because it was too loud for him.Removed via a city ordinance. No other neighbors came to his aid.His sons then later where busted for shooting at the peacock.Same sex rights being discussed in council chambers is a waste of time to him(maybe a coincidence,I believe the owners of the peacock were a gay couple)but removing a peacock from his neighbors property is.
The flyer is by Mike's neighbors. In my opinion they are right in doing it. Mike is an okay guy for the most part. Just out of step with the times and underserving to be a council member. He is ins't capable of representing his constituents.
I agree that it's a cheap shot to put out a negative piece and not identify who is putting it out. I haven't seen this particular one, but if it says nothing about his record on council it seems like pure negative campaigning to me. Even if Nan Abrams had nothing to do with it, it reflects negatively on her that it was put out against her opponent.

Well, if more people thought like you, I'd be tempted put out all kinds of negative crap against the candidate of my choice.
Maybe it's been done.
Eric,
I'm sure it's been done. The trouble is, it's so hard to distinguish who said what about whom when people don't identify themselves. I much prefer the direct approach. Say why you don't agree with someone, don't attack their charachter.
If Mike's neighbors put it out, why didn't they identify themselves? Nancy should say something about this.
Maybe Mike's team put it out.Sometimes stealing thunder works. The issue was certainly going to come up regardless.
It would be a risky strategy but, if it works, who knows?
Someone told me that the hit campaign against Chris Kerrigan was actually orchestrated by the Richard Salzman crew. The girl that told me that seemed to really believe it. I got the impression she wasn't the only one that believed it.
I find that a bit of a stretch but, brilliant strategy, as it seemed to work. Seems pretty risky to me, though.
Politics have just gotten really weird here in Humboldt County the past 5 years. I am not in the "know" loop as far as the Left. Strange. Liberal Democrat and all.
Talk about politics getting weird. Everyone seems to have a campaign manager now.... I don't remember that so much in years past. What's up with that?
8:48 That was intelligent discourse. Could you be more specific?
