If there are elections in June then why does it cost more to vote the runoff in November election?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30719375.post-9743427712212990412010-11-20T07:41:13.120-08:002010-11-20T07:41:13.120-08:00This is all very nice but it's not the way the...This is all very nice but it's not the way the RCV went down in San Francisco. Malia Cohen won D10 because of the DCCC endorsement - when DCCC#1 DeWitt Lacy was eliminated, DCCC#2 Malia Cohen got an insurmountable boost over Sweet, who before that had been doing a better job of getting second- and third-place votes. In D2, candidate Kat Anderson's anti-Peskin mantra pushed Farrell ahead of the politically-anointed Janet Reilly. Neither of the two leapfroggers built coalitions or played especially nice. In fact, Cohen's "stickergate" and Farrell's "man behind the curtain" were two of the most negative tactics in the city. This is not to say RCV is bad. Just to say that it has not tamed your average political beast.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30719375.post-59379294722654174482010-11-19T13:45:14.778-08:002010-11-19T13:45:14.778-08:00During the local campaign finance reform debate ar...During the local campaign finance reform debate arising from the Measure T debacle, I was willing to give this ranked voting idea honest consideration. However, after seeing the results in several Bay Area elections, it looks as if its chief benefit is avoiding a runoff election and related costs.

Is that worth the appearance of a three-card-Monty game? The bottom line is that no matter how you change the current system, it inevitably favors some over the expense of others.Chris Crawfordhttp://www.tsblogs.com/techblog/noreply@blogger.com
